INDEPENDENT STUDY
AND REVISION
As students move through years 7 to 13, we aim to support them become good independent learners. This is done by giving them regular compulsory work and assessment windows to have the opportunity to show what they can recall.
Year 7
During year 7 students will have regular independent study from maths and English from the beginning of year 7. All other subjects will start setting independent study from the second term.
Year 7s are assessed once a year during June 2025
Link to Revision tips document will be here 4 weeks before the assessment window.
During year 7 we will be supporting the students in how best to revise. We will be working on two revision strategies:

Year 8
Year 8s will be set independent study throughout the year. Maths and english will set weekly, other subjects will set less frequently.
Year 8s are assessed once a year during March 2025.
Link to Revision tips document will be here 4 weeks before the assessment window.
Year 9
Year 9s will be set independent study throughout the year.
Year 9s are assessed once a year during January 2025.
Link to Revision tips document will be here 4 weeks before the assessment window.
The independent study will increase towards the end of the year as they look towards Key Stage 4.
Year 10
Year 10s have an independent study weekly timetable. They will be set independent study once a week from all subjects.
Year 10s are assessed once a year during May 2025.

Year 11
Like in year 10, year 11s will be set weekly independent study from each of their subjects. We also expect them to be doing some additional work to complement the compulsory work set so they are reviewing previous topics.
We encourage them to get into good habits by giving them summer work, revision strategies and the revision tips document is released earlier than they’ve had it previously.
Year 11s are assessed twice a year (November 2024 and February 2025), internally before their external exams in the summer
Link to Revision tips document will be here up to 6 weeks before each assessment window.

During year 11 we will be supporting the students in how best to revise. We will be working on two revision strategies:
Prioritising
Organising
Year 12
Year 12s will be set some compulsory independent work but mostly we expect them to do an hour of work outside of the classroom for every hour in the classroom.
Year 12s are assessed twice a year (January 2025 and June 2025). Some nay have external exams during this year, depending on their chosen courses.

During year 12 we will be supporting the students in how best to work independently consistently through the year. They will understand the six strategies for effective learning:
• Elaboration
• Retrieval practice
• Space practice
• Dual Coding
• Interleaving
• Concrete examples
Year 13
During year 13 we continue in a similar way to year 12, however we do expect the students to do more independent study outside of the classroom. By this point they will have a good understanding of the course specifications and likely have clear grade goals.
Year 13s are assessed twice a year (October 2024 and February 2025). External exams may happen during this year, A-level final exams from May 2025.

During Year 13 we will be supporting the students in how best to continue to work independently. They will know which of the six strategies for effective learning work best for their subjects and them as individual learners:
• Elaboration
• Retrieval practice
• Space practice
• Dual Coding
• Interleaving
• Concrete examples
